A Golden Girl Tribute
On July 22nd this year, Estelle Getty passed away. If the name Estelle Getty doesn't ring a bell then maybe you have heard of 'The Golden Girls'. The Golden Girls was a long running television series back in the 80's. It was about 4 women who share a house. I remember watching it back then but it is only just recently that I have come to appreciate the magic of this show. We were talking about old TV shows and the Golden Girls came up. I thought I would see if it was available on dvd so went to Ebay and Amazon and sure enough there were 7 series available. I bought them. Every episode is a delight to watch. They don't write lines for a show like this anymore. I would laugh so hard I would cry. Anyway, one of the characters was Sophia, played by Estelle Getty. Sophia was the mother of Dorothy in the show. She had an incredible wit and sometimes an acid tongue. Estelle was younger than most of the other actresses in the show. I have read that she flunked 2 auditions for the part because she didn't look old enough. On the third try she said to the makeup person to make her look 80. She got the part. You wouldn't know that she was in her mid 50's when you watch the show. She was my favourite character. Estelle Getty had been ill for a long time. When I heard on the news that she had died, a part of me died as well. However, as long as I have these dvd's Estelle Getty will always be alive. Please bring back actresses like Estelle Getty!!!
