Life Without a Dog
Life without a dog, quite frankly, sucks. I have always loved dogs, big and small, and ever since I was a kid I always wanted a dog. I was born and bred in Sydney, Australia. I had a great childhood but with one little problem - my father was terrified of anything that had four legs, bigger than a mouse and woofed. My brother and auntie were the same. Thank God I didn't inherit this. My father would walk around the block if he saw a dog down the street, and I am not exagerating. Therefore I was never allowed a dog. I got a cat and a bird instead. Cats are OK but they're not a dog and a bird, what can we say? Anyway, growing up I was dogless. When I married and we bought a house the first thing we did was go to a pet shop and brought home a beautiful Chow Chow/Collie cross puppy. We named her Fluffy - very original. She had the dense coat of the Chow Chow and the long hair of the Collie. Boy, did she need some grooming! She had the purple tongue of the Chow Chow. One day a little boy saw me walking Fluffy and he said to his mother 'That dog's choking, his tongue is going black'. She had the most beautiful nature and would let kids do anything with her. We had 17 great years with Fluffy. In the end she had arthritis, we gave her gold injections and everything else which the vet thought would help. Then she got cancer. One night she was in so much pain I phoned the vet at 2am and was told to give her panadol. The next morning I had her put to sleep. Never again. I thought I couldn't go through that again but after about 2 months I bought a dog book and started looking for a breed to suit our lifestyle which was pretty busy. I wanted a dog which didn't require a lot of grooming, intelligent, didn't need a lot of exercise and could be left alone for long periods (we worked). The Corgi fitted this. We got Rusty, a Pembroke Corgi, from a breeder. He was everything we expected and more. What a great little big dog. Anyway, to cut a long story short, after about 3 years I got divorced and moved to a caravan park which doesn't allow dogs. My ex got Rusty and I am back to being dogless. These days I have a Corgi website and an ebay store where I design different things for various dog breeds. People send me pictures of their dogs to put on the products and I love seeing how they turn out. It gives me great satisfaction to know that I have helped keep happy memories alive. Even though I walk down the street, pat the dogs (pet therapy), see great pics it still doesn't replace the waggly tail, licking tongue and loving nature of a dog. Being dogless - sucks!!!
